BIRDING IN MORRO BAY AND THE CENTRAL COAST

John Audubon

Want a bird-watching vacation?

San Luis Obispo ranks in the Audubon Society’s national top ten. Over 400 bird species sighted here, including Peregrine Falcons, great blue herons (Morro Bay heron rookery) brown pelicans, California condors (Los Padres National Forest), sandhill and other cranes at Carrizo Plain. Morro Bay bird sanctuary protects over two dozen endangered species.

Morro Bay estuary is on the Pacific Migratory Bird Flyway and its waterways and mud flats are surrounded by grass and brush covered hills, home to oysters, shellfish, white halibut, perch and smelt. Not only do the birds go wild for this feeding habitat, John James Audubon would have gone out of his mind.
